Programs that publish and/or distribute voter information guides, sample ballots and other materials that provide information regarding the positions of rival candidates in an election, summaries of the pros and cons of specific ballot measures (including potential costs to taxpayers and arguments for and against individual measures prepared by proponents and opponents), rules for same day voter registration and general information about precinct boundaries, the location and hours of polling places, early voting options, secured vote by mail ballot drop-off locations (where available), as well as other details regarding the content or the mechanics of the election.

Election Information

The office of the individual who holds the position of county elections director and whose staff are responsible for registering voters; and administering, preparing, conducting and tallying, in a uniform and impartial manner, federal, state and county elections in accordance to state statutes. The office may also provide election services and assistance to cities, towns, school districts and special districts of the county; and generally acts as a registry and dissemination center for candidate, campaign, financing, political and voting information. In situations where there is no county elections director, these responsibilities may be handled by other elected officials.

County Elections Director Offices

Organizations that make an effort to increase the availability and utilization of community services by specific target populations by providing direct services for targeted individuals in their homes or other convenient locations or by making special efforts to ensure that a particular group is aware of available services and encouraged to participate. Included are programs that do outreach regarding their own services as well as those which encourage a target population to use a wide variety of services.

Outreach Programs

Government offices that provide copies of voter registration applications and maintain official records of individuals who have exercised their right to participate in the election process by registering to vote. Included are the local Registrar of Voters offices and other government offices through which people can obtain and file their registration forms; and offices that are responsible for managing online voter registration. In order to qualify, people must be citizens; age 18 or older; and residents of the state, county/municipal district or precinct for at least 30 days. People are required to re-register if they change their names, their addresses or their party affiliations.

Voter Registration Offices

Programs that employ door-to-door canvassing, direct mail campaigns, telephone calls prior to and on election day, poll watching and pick-up, and voter support services (such as rides to the polls or child care) as strategies for getting people out to vote on election day.

Get Out the Vote Drives

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals who are willing, on a voluntary basis without remuneration, to work on voter registration drives, the campaigns of particular candidates for public office or at polling places during elections; or to make calls to "get out the vote" prior to election day. Polling place volunteers compile and verify voter lists from official registration records, verify identification of voters, obtain signatures and record the names of voters to prevent voting by unauthorized persons, distribute ballots to voters, answer questions concerning voting procedures, count valid ballots and prepare official reports of election results.
