Television stations located in defined broadcast areas that use authorized channels to broadcast signals that can be picked up by standard television receivers. Local television stations may carry both locally and nationally produced content. Included are public television stations which are supported by public funds and contributions, and those that are operated commercially, some of which are owned by television networks.

Local Broadcast Television Stations

Channels set aside for public, educational or government use at the request of local government entities that authorize cable television franchises. Public access channels are available for use by the general public and are usually administered either by the cable operator or by a third party designated by the franchising authority. Educational access channels are used by educational institutions for educational programming. Time on these channels is typically allocated by either the franchising authority or the cable operator among local schools, colleges and universities. Governmental access channels are used for programming by organs of local government and, in most jurisdictions, are directly controlled by the franchising authority.

Community Access Channels

Programs that publish newsletters to make the public aware of the services which are available within the community, to review legislation and other measures for resolving specific social problems and/or to provide information or opinions about other topics that may be of interest to a particular target group or the community at large.
