Electric Service Billing/Collections

Programs provide information about the location of corridors for the distribution of oil, gas, hydrogen and electricity; current and pending rights of way for power lines and pipelines across tracts of federal, state and private land; plans for the construction, maintenance and repair of electric power lines, natural gas pipelines and other components of energy "superhighways"; and regulations relating to secondary land uses around existing energy corridors. Overhead power lines are electric power transmission cables suspended by a sequence of steel towers or poles. The land directly under and adjacent to these power cables may be suitable for industrial uses; water distribution and oil or gas pipelines; urban trails; passive or active recreational spaces; or natural environmental areas such as urban wetlands. Also included are programs that provide information or respond to complaints from people about purported health risks associated with exposure to elevated levels of ELF magnetic fields such as those originating from electric power transmission lines or safety issues associated with transmission equipment; the impact of power lines and pipelines on surrounding wildlife and vegetation along the corridors; or who have concerns about other related issues.

Power Line/Pipeline Information

Electric companies that own the system of poles, wires, conduits or other fixtures along public highways or streets that is necessary to deliver purchased electricity to a retail consumer's home or business. Included are investor-owned electric utilities, municipal and state utilities, federal electric utilities, and rural electric cooperatives (member-owned electric utility companies that may be engaged in the generation, wholesale purchasing, transmission, and/or distribution of electric power to serve the demands of their members on a nonprofit basis). In areas where deregulation has occurred and unbundled electric service is available, local utility companies continue to provide electricity distribution services for customers who elect to purchase their electricity from an alternative supplier, but will provide the full package of bundled electric services for customers who do not choose direct access via such a supplier. They are responsible for processing connection orders; installing, maintaining and repairing meters and other necessary equipment; and accepting and responding to reports of downed or arcing power lines, transformers that have been hit by lightning or otherwise affected by bad weather or other problems which constitute a hazard or threaten to interrupt service.
