Responsible for public works programs and services in Maricopa including city-owned building and vehicle maintenance, waste and recycling center, and street repairs and maintenance.

Offices that are responsible for acquiring, planning, constructing, expanding, repairing and/or managing the utilization of a physical plant in order to most effectively provide for the delivery of services; arrange for security, supervise the management of basic utilities (heating, electricity, air conditioning and sanitary arrangements), and other similar tasks. Specific responsibilities may include long-range and annual facility planning; facility financial forecasting; real estate acquisition and/or disposal; architectural and engineering planning and design; new construction and/or renovation; work specifications, installation and space management; maintenance and operations management; energy management; telecommunications integration; security; and/or general administrative services.

Facility Management Offices

Offices that are responsible for overseeing the repair, maintenance and servicing of motorized vehicles and equipment (including light, medium and heavy duty automobiles, trucks, tractors and off-road construction equipment) that are owned and operated by an organization. Responsibilities include inspecting motorized equipment; diagnosing and determining the extent of necessary repairs; making required repairs; performing tune-ups; installing new and reconditioned parts and components; keeping a record of repairs; assisting in maintaining inventory control of replacement parts; and other similar fleet maintenance tasks.

Fleet Maintenance Offices

Community-sponsored voluntary or mandatory programs that encourage people in residential settings to recycle reusable resources such as newspaper, glass, plastic and metals such as aluminum, tin and steel which are found in cans. The program may supply recycling containers to participating households and may collect the recyclable materials on a regular basis.

Residential Recycling Programs

Intermediate holding facilities for garbage where waste is reloaded into large trucks for more cost-efficient transportation to landfills, recycling dealers and resource recovery sites.

Refuse Transfer Stations

Programs that are responsible for maintenance and repair of streets, highways, bicycle paths, bridges, pedestrian overpasses and other public byways; placement and maintenance of pavement markings; curb and gutter repair; sidewalk repair; leaf and debris removal; street cleaning; street salting; snow removal; roadside landscape maintenance; roadside rest stop amenities; removal of traffic and pedestrian obstructions; and other similar street-related services.

Street Maintenance

Responsible for countywide engineering, surveying, road maintenance, traffic control, facilities and park facilities management, fleet services, and water operations.

Programs that establish minimum standards for surface and ground water quality and develop and enforce regulations to prevent or reduce water pollution and assure a reliable supply of healthy drinking water and water that is suitable for other purposes. Water quality assurance programs issue permits specifying the types and amounts of pollutants that may be discharged without violating water quality standards; identify and monitor land uses and activities such as manufacturing or farming that are potential sources of pollution; test, record and report on the quality of water in lakes, rivers, streams, underground aquifers and water supply wells upon which public water systems rely; monitor water treatment and distribution systems; issue warnings and investigate hazards related to contamination; and, when warranted, initiate litigation against individuals and organizations who have failed to comply with water pollution control regulations. These programs may also provide support for the development and oversight of wastewater treatment facilities and certify operators of those facilities. Water quality is generally defined in terms of its designated use, e.g., for drinking, swimming, farming, fish production or industrial processes.

Water Quality Assurance

Local government offices that are responsible for planning and conducting all survey activities for the jurisdiction; reviewing city/county annexations, plats and legal descriptions; and maintaining survey records. They perform boundary, topographical and property surveys of city/county properties, parks, recreational facilities, engineering improvements and land to be purchased and/or sold by/to the jurisdiction; maintain a depository and review process for plats of all surveys where property corner monuments were set to establish property boundaries; re-establish lost or obliterated section corner monuments (official survey marker locations established by the original surveyor working for the U.S. Congress); create and maintain a geographical mapping system showing voting, legislative, and school districts; develop and maintain a street centerline addressing system to assist the city/county in parcel identification, law enforcement response time, and verification of special project boundaries; maintain current and historical aerial photography maps of the area; and assist the general public with locating property surveys, historical research, general survey questions, and interpreting and understanding legal descriptions. Surveys record geographic conditions and manmade features as they currently exist including terrain, drainage, property boundaries and ownership, soil condition and other physical features.
