Organizations that are actively seeking individuals who are proficient in American Sign Language or other systems such as Signing Exact English (which involves manually coded English) and are willing to use their skills to benefit the agency or the people it serves on a voluntary basis without remuneration. Sign language volunteers help staff members or clients who are deaf or have hearing impairments and hearing individuals communicate with one another.

Language Interpretation/Translation Volunteer Opportunities

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals with the requisite skills and experience who are willing, on a voluntary basis without remuneration, to help people obtain and responsibly use credit, obtain or correct information in their credit reports, reduce their debt burden, manage their financial resources more effectively, complete their tax returns during tax season or pay their bills in an orderly way. Included are organizations with volunteer positions for individuals who can manage the financial affairs of older adults with conditions like Alzheimer's disease or individuals with disabilities who are unable to handle the responsibility themselves. Tasks include receiving and depositing benefits checks from Social Security or other federal programs, and/or writing checks and paying bills for people served by the program.

Personal Finances/Tax Assistance Volunteer Opportunities

Programs that recruit and train people who want to learn how to prepare tax forms in order to qualify as VITA tax assistance volunteers in local centers that assist older adults and low-income individuals to complete their tax return forms, develop arrangements with community centers which have agreed to become service sites for the program, publicize the availability and locations of the program during the tax preparation period, and equip the service sites with necessary materials.

VITA Program Coordination

Programs that provide information and guidance for employers of and/or employees who earn less than a specified amount during the year, regardless of whether it is taxable, and qualify for a credit which allows them to subtract up to $4,008 from their tax liability at the end of the year or obtain a refund. The minimum income amount varies depending on whether the individual has qualifying children (sons, daughters, adopted children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, stepchildren, or eligible foster children who meet age criteria and have lived with individual in the U.S. for a specified period of time) and their number. Eligible foster children may include brothers, sisters, step brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews or children placed by an authorizing placement agency. Also included are organizations that issue the tax credits.
