Emergency management agencies, health departments and other entities that conduct multi-hazard planning for their communities that will enable them to mitigate, prepare for, respond to or recover from natural disasters, public health crises, terrorist incidents or other emergencies that occur within or have an impact on their area. Emergency planning addresses citizen awareness and self-sufficiency, responder capabilities, interagency cooperation in emergency operations and the roles, responsibilities and activities of public and private organizations and their staffs in all phases of the disaster.

Emergency Preparedness and Response Planning

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals with the requisite skills and experience who are willing to work on a voluntary basis without remuneration handling telephone or in-person inquiries from people in communities that have been devastated by a major fire, flood, hurricane, earthquake, tornado, tsunami, volcanic eruption, landslide, mudslide, snowstorm, drought, famine, explosion or nuclear accident, the outbreak of civil unrest, or other large-scale emergency of natural or human origin that disrupts the community's normal functioning. Disaster service center/hotline volunteers make an assessment of each person’s situation and provide them with the information they request and/or refer them to organizations whose services can meet their disaster-related needs.

Joint fund-raising efforts usually administered by a nonprofit "umbrella" organization like United Way or United Jewish Appeal which, in turn, distributes the contributed funds to a diverse range of nonprofit agencies. Some of these programs may also provide direct services for individuals and organizations in their community. 

Federated Giving Programs

Governing boards, advisory boards, commissions, committees and other groups that provide advice, guidance and, in some cases, formal oversight, for public and private organizations that are responsible for the provision of services to the community; that assess existing social conditions and problems and develop and assist in the implementation of specific strategies for meeting the human service needs of the community; and/or which assist community agencies and organizations to coordinate the provision of services in an efficient, nonduplicative way. Also included are entities that are composed of community agencies which have an established networking relationship that provides a collaborative approach to addressing specific identified community needs and problems.

Planning/Coordinating/Advisory Groups

Divisions of businesses or nonprofit agencies that are responsible for developing products or delivering designated services to the public. Departments of NGOs are generally led by a manager, supervisor, director or vice president.

Nongovernmental Agency Departments

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals who are willing, on a voluntary basis without remuneration, to decorate or otherwise prepare a facility for a special event e.g., set up tables and chairs or put up/take down a tent; help with participant registration; staff an information booth, manage a silent auction table or do other work during the event; and clean up afterwards.

Event Setup/Cleanup Volunteer Opportunities

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals with the requisite skills and experience who are willing, on a voluntary basis without remuneration, to take responsibility for planning and coordinating special events. Activities may include arranging event logistics, renting  suitable space, overseeing decoration of the facility or other preparations, assigning tasks to supporting staff/volunteers and supervising their activities, and ensuring that the event runs smoothly.

Event Coordination Volunteer Opportunities

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals with the requisite skills and experience who are willing to work on a voluntary basis without remuneration to provide protection, supervision, care and support for individuals and families, (particularly children, older adults, people with disabilities and other vulnerable populations) in the aftermath of a disaster or other emergency.
