Programs, which may be available on a 24-hour basis, that provide walk-in treatment services for people who have minor illnesses or injuries. Urgent care centers serve as an alternative to hospital emergency departments for episodic care that can not be delayed until an appointment at a physician's office is available; and are often equipped to provide services not generally available in primary care physician offices, e.g., have x-ray facilities that allow for treatment of minor fractures and foreign bodies such as nail gun injuries and/or minor care trauma rooms that facilitate the repair of minor and moderate to severe lacerations that can be treated in an urgent care center.

Urgent Care Centers

Programs that conduct microscopic studies of tissue samples from the cervix or vagina as a means of early cancer detection in women.

Pap Tests

Programs that offer minor, non-life-threatening operations either in the office of the physician or in a hospital on a basis that permits the patient to come into the hospital in the morning, have the surgery and return home the same day.

Outpatient Surgery

Programs that are staffed by specialists who provide care for women who have routine pregnancies. Obstetricians are responsible for managing a woman's pregnancy, delivering her child and providing medical care, as needed, during the period of time it takes for her uterus to return to its normal size (generally 42 days).

General Obstetrics

Programs usually available in community-based health clinics and family planning centers that provide primary and preventive care, family planning services, diagnostic imaging, management of menopause, medical and surgical treatment of disorders and/or diagnosis and treatment of cancers affecting people with a uterus. Specific routine services generally include pap smears, pelvic examinations, breast exams, urinalysis, pregnancy testing, laboratory tests including testing for sexually transmitted infections, contraception, morning after contraception and hormone replacement therapy.

Gynecology Services

Programs that offer any of a variety of tests that are used to measure an individual's bone mass, bone density and/or how tightly the bone matter is packed. The most common procedure (the DEXA scan) uses a double beam x-ray; can be conducted at a variety of sites including the spine, hip or total body; and is recommended for people who have suffered a recent fracture in which osteoporosis is suspected or who are at risk for osteoporosis. Others include an ultrasound test which measures bone density in the heel, wrist or forearm; the SXA scan (single energy x-ray absorptiometry) which measures the wrist or heel; the PDXA scan (peripheral dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry) which measures the wrist, heel or finger; RA (radiographic x-ray absorptiometry) which measures the hand; DPA (dual photon x-ray absorptiometry) which measures the spine, hip or total body; SPA (single photon x-ray absorptiometry) which measures the wrist; and QCT (quantitative computed tomography) which measures the spine or hip. Although all bones of the skeleton will reflect osteoporosis to some extent, bone density studies of the spine and hip may detect bone loss earlier. Peripheral bone measurements are accurate enough to be used as screening tools but not as precise as the DEXA test which is often recommended if the results of screening procedures indicate that further testing is warranted. The test can be repeated to evaluate the results of medication, estrogen-replacement therapy or other forms of treatment.

Bone Mineral Density Tests

Programs that offer the screening procedure for the early detection of breast cancer which involves an X-ray picture of the breast area which can be studied for abnormalities.

Mammograms

Routine examinations conducted on an annual basis to assess the general physical condition of an individual and detect abnormalities. General physicals vary, but most involve a discussion of any concerns the patient may be having; checking vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, heart rate and respiration rate), weight and general appearance; heart and lung exams using a stethoscope; a head and neck exam that looks at the throat, teeth and gums, ears, sinuses, eyes, lymph nodes, thyroid and carotid arteries; an abdominal exam that uses palpation to detect liver size, the presence of abdominal fluid or tenderness; a visual examination of the extremities; and breast and pelvic exams for women, testicular and prostate exams for men. The annual physical exam also provides an opportunity to refocus attention on prevention and screening and routine laboratory tests may be suggested.

General Physical Examinations

Consumer-based, community-controlled, nonprofit outpatient facilities that provide basic health care including physical examinations, immunizations, family planning, nutrition assistance and diagnosis and treatment of common ailments for low income people, people who are homeless or uninsured/underinsured or other medically underserved populations that are geographically, economically and culturally challenged. Services are generally provided on an ability-to-pay basis. In the U.S., most community clinics are part of the network of Federally Qualified Health Centers, and many are known as "free clinics".

Community Clinics

Systematically coordinated, patient-centered physical and mental health care delivered by a team of primary care and mental health clinicians in either a primary care or mental health setting. The objectives of coordinated mental health, substance use and primary care services are to increase access to appropriate prevention, treatment, recovery and wellness services and activities; reduce disparities between the availability of services for people with mental health and substance use disorders as compared with the availability of services for people with other medical conditions; and to ensure that mental and physical health services are well integrated and coordinated among service providers.

Hospitals and other health facilities that are actively seeking individuals who are willing to serve as nurses' aides on a voluntary basis without remuneration, deliver meals to patients, feed patients who need assistance, help patients in wheelchairs move from one part of the facility to another and provide other similar forms of support.

Patient Support Volunteer Opportunities

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals who are willing to call on people who are hospitalized or in another institutional setting with the objective of brightening their day and helping them to maintain contact with the outside world by reading, talking, listening, writing letters or performing other similar tasks.

Hospital/Institutional Visit Volunteer Opportunities

Departments within hospitals or freestanding clinics operated by hospitals or hospital systems that are designed for the diagnosis and treatment of people with health problems who do not currently require a bed or admission for overnight care. Outpatient departments offer a wide range of treatment services, diagnostic tests and minor surgical procedures.

Hospital Based Outpatient Services

Divisions of businesses or nonprofit agencies that are responsible for developing products or delivering designated services to the public. Departments of NGOs are generally led by a manager, supervisor, director or vice president.

Nongovernmental Agency Departments

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals with the requisite skills who are willing to do general office work on a voluntary basis without remuneration.

Clerical Volunteer Opportunities

Hospitals that are strategically located and equipped with licensed helicopter pads and staffed by specially trained trauma surgeons and anesthesiologists who are available in-house 24 hours per day to treat critically injured victims of traffic accidents, fires, gunshot wounds or other injuries during the crucial "golden hour" when their surgical needs are highest.
