Programs, often offered by police and fire personnel, that conduct inspections which offer guidance regarding child passenger safety seats and the law, choosing a car seat that is appropriate for a particular child's height and weight, correct car seat installation and restraining a child in a car seat.

Child Passenger Safety Seat Inspections

Programs that are designed to increase public awareness of the measures that people can take to protect children from preventable injuries and fatalities sustained in and around automobiles. Included are programs that provide information about laws which relate to the use of child passenger safety seats to restrain infants and young children who are riding as passengers in motor vehicles, which stress the importance of child passenger safety measures and/or which make available information about the relative merits of different types of child passenger safety seats; and those that address safety issues such as heat stroke, hypothermia, carbon monoxide poisoning, runaway vehicles, carjacking/abduction, trunk entrapment, self-release from car seat and other problems that may occur when young children are left unattended in a vehicle.

Child Passenger Safety Education

Programs that are designed to raise awareness of the measures people can take to prevent accidents and provide for the safety of young children. The programs deal broadly with a wide range of infant and child safety issues rather than focusing on specific areas of risk. Topics may include car seat safety and installation, sleep safety, stroller/carrier safety, high chair safety, health concerns (e.g., Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, shaken baby syndrome, lead poisoning, sun exposure and the risks associated with second hand smoke), choking and fall prevention, pet safety, pool and general water safety and baby-proofing the home.

Infant and Child Safety Education

Programs that provide information about a wide variety of accident prevention and other safety topics rather than specializing in a particular safety-related area.

General Safety Education

Provides CPR and First Aid Training which are also offered in Spanish and for the hearing impaired, Wilderness First Aid Training, Babysitter's Training, Lifeguarding Training, Water Safety Instructor Training, Workplace Training, School Training and more.

American Red Cross Lifesaving Skills Training - Phoenix | American Red Cross Lifesaving Skills Training - Phoenix

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals with the requisite knowledge, skills and experience who are willing, on a voluntary basis without remuneration, to develop educational materials or training programs that make individuals, families and communities aware of the measures people can take to reduce the risk of fires or accidents in the home, at school, at work, in the air or on the water or while walking, driving or riding as a passenger in a motor vehicle; and/or which provide instructions for preparing for and surviving an accident, major disaster or other emergency should one occur.

Safety/Disaster Education Volunteer Opportunities

Programs that provide instruction that covers a range of basic paramedical techniques (such as controlling bleeding, preventing shock, rigging emergency splints/wraps for bone breaks/sprains) that can be used to provide basic emergency treatment for individuals who are sick or have been injured before professional medical attention is available. Also included is instruction in treating minor injuries such as insect bites, scratches, burns and splinters that normally do not require medical care.

General First Aid Instruction

Programs that provide opportunities for young people to learn the basic skills and emergency procedures that are required for the care of infants and small children. Some programs provide certificates for individuals who successfully complete the course.

Babysitting Instruction

Programs that provide instruction for individuals who want to develop the knowledge and skills that will enable them to respond effectively to aquatic emergencies. Training includes surveillance skills, rescue skills, first aid and CPR, and professional lifeguarding responsibilities such as appropriate interaction with the public and managing uncoopertive patrons. Most programs require that participants pass a 500 yard swim using crawl, side and back strokes; and demonstrate rescue skills. Certificates are provided to people who successfully complete the course.

Lifeguard Training

Programs that instruct the public in the appropriate techniques for prolonging the lives of victims of heart failure until emergency medical care can be provided. Included may be instruction in full CPR which combines rescue breaths with chest compressions (the best option in some emergencies, including those involving infants and children, drowning victims or people who collapse due to breathing problems) and/or hands only CPR which involves chest compressions only, no mouth to mouth contact. Hands only CPR is used in emergencies where someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest.

CPR Instruction

Programs that are designed to increase public awareness of the measures that people can take to improve safety in the settings in which people work. Topics may include slips and falls, ladder safety, ergonomics, lifting and carrying, tool and equipment safety, personal protective equipment, vehicle safety, hazardous chemicals, electrical safety, stress, workplace violence, and safety issues such as hearing preservation programs and working safely in confined spaces that may relate to a particular industry or workplace environment.

Workplace Safety Education

Programs that are designed to increase public awareness of the measures that people can take to improve the safety of children while they are at school. School safety programs provide information about school playground safety, safety in halls and classrooms and emergency procedures in case of a fire, earthquake or other disaster that may occur while children are in school.

School Safety Education

Promotes healthy lifestyles through education. Offers information on nutrition, teen pregnancy prevention, and injury prevention,.

Yuma County Health Promotion Division | Yuma County Health Promotion Division

Programs that provide information concerning the basic principles of healthful eating, food handling, food preparation and shopping skills. Included is information about the basic food groups, vitamin and mineral requirements, the relationship of nutrition to the preservation of good health and the prevention of illness, and dietary choices such as vegetarianism.

Nutrition Education

Offers a variety of safety and health educational materials and programs.

Programs that are designed to increase public awareness of the measures people can take to ensure their safety when driving an automobile or other motor vehicle. Driving safety programs provide information about traffic laws as they apply to motor vehicles; warnings regarding behaviors which contribute to accidents such as speeding and driving while drowsy or intoxicated; suggestions for avoiding confrontations with aggressive drivers; and tips for driving safely under specific conditions, e.g., with trucks and other large vehicles, in bad weather, in heavy traffic, in parking lots, or in areas where deer and other large animals may be roadway hazards. Information about recommended automobile maintenance practices, used car purchase tips and suggestions regarding safety equipment such as air bags may also be included.

Driving Safety Education

Programs that are designed to increase public awareness of the measures that people can take to ensure their safety while driving or riding as passengers on motorcycles. Motorcycle safety programs provide information about the importance of safety helmets and protective clothing, the rules of the road as they apply to motorcyclists and the types of violations or other riding behaviors that most frequently result in accidents.

Motorcycle Safety Education

Programs that provide general information about hazards found indoors in homes and apartments and the measures people can take to eliminate them. Topics may include electrical safety (e.g., appliances, cords and fixtures); fire prevention tips (e.g., kitchen/cooking safety, candle safety, portable space heaters and other heating systems, smoking, ignition resistant upholstery fabrics, smoke alarms and other warning systems); shower and bathtub safety; bedroom safety (e.g., proximity of lamps/light switches and a telephone to the bed, electric blankets); indoor air quality, lead paint and other health and safety issues; hazardous household products; injury prevention (e.g., slips and falls); using ladders and step stools; stairway safety; home security; advance family planning for escape during an emergency; and other similar issues.

Indoor Home Safety Education

Programs, frequently directed at parents and/or their children, that are designed to increase public awareness of the basic rules of pedestrian safety and the potential dangers of crossing the street or playing in or near streets and driveways.
