Institutions that acquire, preserve, research and exhibit permanent and/or traveling collections of artifacts which relate to the history of medicine and the health sciences. Included may be fluid-preserved anatomical and pathological specimens; medical and surgical instruments from earlier eras; replicas of early operating theaters or other health care venues; materials documenting significant discoveries or innovations in medicine; medical textbooks, archival materials, illustrations and/or photographs; pharmaceuticals; models and interactive exhibits which illustrate the human body, its organs and how each body system works to preserve health; journals and other memorabilia relating to famous scientists and physicians; and medical devices and "cures" associated with quackery.  Some medical museums may focus on a particular medical specialty such as women's health, rural medicine or substance abuse; and many have educational programs for school children and other visitors.

Disease Control Advisories

Programs that attempt to control the occurrence of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), a group of symptoms (including certain infections and/or cancers) that collectively characterize the condition and are the result of a weakening of the immune system caused by infection with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). Activities include surveillance of the occurrence of the disease in the community, investigation of individual cases, and development of case histories and other interventions that will help to increase the medical establishment's understanding of the causes of the diseases and potential methods of prevention and cure. AIDS control activities are often initiated by local HIV prevention planning groups that are responsible for developing needs assessments and planning long and short-term strategies specific to target communities as determined by the studies.

AIDS/HIV Control

Programs that control the occurrence of influenza by monitoring the incidence of the disease in the general population, identifying the level of influenza activity (no activity, sporadic, local, regional or widespread), determining the types of virus that are circulating, detecting changes in the influenza virus, investigating individual outbreaks, tracking the number of hospitalizations and flu-related deaths, evaluating prevention efforts and taking appropriate measures to prevent disease transmission.

Influenza Control

Programs that control the occurrence of meningococcal disease/meningitis by monitoring the incidence of the disease in the general population, investigating individual outbreaks and identifying and screening recent contacts of people who are infected to stop the spread of the disease.

Meningitis Control

Programs that attempt to control the occurrence and spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).  SARS is an infection that is characterized by a fever of at least 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) followed by respiratory symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing. Other symptoms may include muscle aches, headaches and a sore throat. In some cases the respiratory symptoms become severe enough that patients require oxygen support and mechanical ventilation. The disease is spread by close personal contact with an infected individual.

SARS Control

Programs that control the occurrence of gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes and other infections that are transmitted by sexual contact by monitoring the incidence of the infections in the general population, investigating individual outbreaks, and identifying and screening recent contacts of people who are infected to stop the spread of infections.

Sexually Transmitted Infection Control

Programs that control the occurrence of tuberculosis by monitoring the incidence of the disease in the general population, investigating individual outbreaks and identifying and screening recent contacts of people who are infected to stop the spread of the disease.

Tuberculosis Control

Programs that control the occurrence of West Nile Virus by monitoring the incidence of the disease in local bird and mammal populations using mechanisms like dead bird reporting hotlines, and promoting preventive measures to reduce the likelihood of mosquito bites such as the removal of standing water in homes and gardens, encourage people to wear long sleeved clothing and long pants when walking outside in the morning and evening in places where mosquitoes are prevalent, and the application of insect repellent containing DEET.

West Nile Virus Control

Programs that investigate the causes, characteristics and impact of the occurrence in a community or region of a group of illnesses of a similar nature whose numbers are clearly in excess of normal expectation and are derived from a common source.

Epidemic Investigation

Programs that produce statistics which relate to services utilization patterns within the community and provide data regarding duplication of service and service gaps for use by public and private planning bodies and service providers in their allocation decisions.

Human Services Statistics

Programs that attempt to control the occurrence and spread of the virus that causes the respiratory illness COVID-19. Activities include surveillance of the occurrence of the disease in the community, investigation of individual cases, raising awareness of risk factors for infection, and protective measures such as vaccination and masking that individuals can take to reduce human transmission. Those most at risk for serious illness from the virus are older adults and people with preexisting health conditions.

COVID-19 Control

Investigates the outbreaks of infectious diseases and food-borne illnesses. Provides information about the Ebola Virus, H1N1 influenza (Swine Flu), Zika virus, and the West Nile Virus. Accepts and investigates complaints about standing water and other concerns related to mosquito control. Compiles statistics on reported infectious diseases.

Programs that attempt to control the occurrence and spread of Ebola, a rare and deadly disease caused by infection with one of the Ebola virus strains found in several African countries.  Good outbreak control relies on a defined set of interventions including case management, surveillance and contact tracing, a good laboratory service, safe burials and social mobilization. Community engagement is key to successfully controlling outbreaks. Raising awareness of risk factors for Ebola infection and protective measures that individuals can take is an effective way to reduce human transmission. Health-care workers caring for patients with suspected or confirmed Ebola virus need to apply extra infection control measures to prevent contact with the patient’s blood and body fluids and contaminated surfaces or materials such as clothing and bedding. Safety measures include wearing face protection (a face shield or a medical mask and goggles), a clean, non-sterile long-sleeved gown, and gloves (sterile gloves for some procedures). Laboratory workers are also at risk. Samples taken from humans and animals for investigation of Ebola infection should be handled by trained staff and processed in suitably equipped laboratories.

Programs that investigate reported cases of food poisoning from commercial sources (restaurants, vending machines, manufacturers, markets), ensure that the diagnosis is confirmed, identify the source of the problem, and work with the establishment in which the outbreak originated to prevent further transmission of the illness by disposing of the contaminated food and correcting the food handling practices that caused the problem.

Programs that attempt to control the occurrence of rabies by monitoring the incidence of the disease in bats, coyotes, skunks and other wild animal populations that are susceptible; locating and isolating animals who are suspected of having rabies; and locating and treating people who have been bitten by an animal who may have been rabid.

Provides a variety of health services. Includes family planning, communicable disease and sexually transmitted disease (STD) control, adult and childhood immunizations, flu shots, and tuberculosis control.

Programs that inoculate susceptible individuals of all ages, but particularly people who are very young or very old, to prevent them from contracting any of the variant strains of influenza that are prevalent during the winter and spring. The vaccine may be administered as a "shot" that is given with a needle, usually in the arm, or in the form of a nasal mist.

Flu Vaccines

Programs that protect and improve the health of the community through the use of public health nurses whose services are available through departments of public health, schools and voluntary agencies, typically in connection with medical programs supervised by physicians. Activities may include home visits to provide nursing under medical supervision for acutely ill patients and people who are chronically ill; outreach to populations who may not seek out health care through a traditional medical facility; support for physicians in public health clinics and disease detection programs; first aid and screening programs for school children; nutrition counseling; family planning information and a wide range of health education and prevention programs for the community at large which deal with personal health practices that can help to prevent illness.

Public Health Nursing

Programs that inoculate infants and young children to prevent them from contracting diseases to which they are particularly susceptible including diphtheria, tetanus (lockjaw), measles, mumps, chicken pox (varicella), rubella (German measles), whooping cough (pertussis), Hib (haemophilus influenzae type B), hepatitis B, pneumococcal infections and polio. Hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for use in selected locales and for certain high-risk groups. Influenza vaccine is recommended annually for children older than six months with specific risk factors. Rotavirus vaccination (to prevent acute gastroenteritis with vomiting and severe diarrhea) is recommended during the first year of infancy. A baby should receive two or three doses depending on the brand used. Some childhood immunizations involve a series of doses at specific intervals.

Programs that inoculate the general population to prevent individuals from contracting diseases to which they are particularly susceptible, or to prevent infecting others at greater risk of severe illness, including newborns and young children, people who could become pregnant, older adults, and/or travelers, rather than specializing in a particular type of immunization.
