Inspects all public eating and drinking establishments, hotels/motels, schools, trailer courts, bakeries, processing plants, retail grocery outlets, health care facility food services, septic tanks, and public swimming pools. Provides guidelines for safe food handling, issues food service permits, and investigates food samples suspected of having contamination. Also operates the vector control program and investigates complaints about public health nuisances.

Reviews and approves plans for construction. Inspects existing facilities for compliance with federal, state, and local codes and issue permits to operate.

Performs inspections and investigates complaints about water systems. Inspects more than 200 drinking water systems including operation and maintenance of the system; evaluates the system for producing and distributing safe drinking water. Performs final inspections for septic systems. Coordinates with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and the community on a wide range of water quality issues.

Responds to environmental and zoning violation complaints in Pima County. Includes complaints regarding air quality (such as emissions coming from a business, burning, and dust), water quality (such as drinking water, industrial discharges, and draining swimming pools), waste (such as loose garbage in residential areas, raw sewage, and removal of demolition projects), and zoning violation (such as weeds, junk vehicles, excessive farm animals, and commercial use in residential zone). Does not handle landlord/tenant disputes, or complaints about bees, mold, or indoor air quality.

Distributes water supplies, including storage tanks, wells, fire hydrants, pumps and water meters. Operates and maintains wastewater treatment facility, collection system, sewage lift stations, and effluent reuse area. Installs taps for new homes and businesses, performs field location (blue staking) of the underground collection system, and disposes of the plant's effluent.

Reviews plans, performs inspections, and issues permits for water, wastewater, and solid waste related activities throughout Maricopa County. Regulates public water systems that operate within Maricopa County. Approves construction plans and performs inspections of public/semi-public pools and artificial/semi-artificial lakes.

Inspects and issues permit to restaurants, bars, school kitchens, mobile food vendors, and food vendors at special events and other venues at which food is prepared for and served to the public. Issues food handling permits. Inspects camps, public and semi-public pools, hotels, motels, and other nightly rental facilities to ensure clean and sanitary conditions exist. Investigates complaints and enforces rules to eliminate unsanitary conditions. Reviews plans for septic tank systems or other onsite sewage disposal systems, inspects septic tank systems and other onsite sewage disposal systems, and issues permits for onsite sewage disposal systems. Investigates complaints and enforces rules to eliminate environmental nuisances.

Responsible for planning, zoning, building safety, floodplain management, 911 rural addressing, geographic information system (GIS) mapping, Community Development Block Grant administration, and environmental services including water quality studies.

Responsible for engineering, facilities maintenance, fleet maintenance, streets, cemetery, sanitation, water, and wastewater.

Coordinates ADEQ's activities to protect public health and the environment along the Arizona-Mexico border, conducts inspections and complaint investigations of permitted and non-permitted air pollution sources, water and wastewater facilities, responds to emergencies that threaten public health and the environment and processes open burn permit applications. Monitors and tests public drinking water systems to ensure safe, potable water supplies, inspects the construction and operation of wastewater treatment facilities and on-site systems, oversees the investigation and cleanup of contaminated soil and groundwater Superfund sites and supports ADEQ's groundwater monitoring, source water assessments and water quality permitting activities.

Responsible for countywide engineering, surveying, road maintenance, traffic control, facilities and park facilities management, fleet services, and water operations.

Monitors water quality throughout Arizona. Issues permits for water treatment plants and assures compliance.
