Affirm Sexual and Reproductive Health | Affirm Sexual and Reproductive Health

Programs that use specially equipped mobile vehicles to deliver basic health care services to vulnerable and/or remote populations that are unable to access a community health care facility. The mobile clinics make scheduled stops in different neighborhoods and offer a wide variety of services which may include general physical examinations, pediatric services, health screening, vision screening, flu shots, childhood immunizations, laboratory services, WIC certification, STI screening and treatment, family planning services, pregnancy testing and treatment for minor illnesses. Included are street medicine programs that use outreach workers to seek out and provide primary health care services for unsheltered homeless people living on the streets, under bridges, in abandoned buildings or wherever else they stay.

Mobile Health Care

Programs that control the occurrence of gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes and other infections that are transmitted by sexual contact by monitoring the incidence of the infections in the general population, investigating individual outbreaks, and identifying and screening recent contacts of people who are infected to stop the spread of infections.

Sexually Transmitted Infection Control

Age-appropriate education programs that address the biological, sociocultural, psychological and spiritual aspects of human sexuality. Topics may include an introduction to the nature of sexuality and the process of reproduction; male and female anatomy; the function of  hormones; the menstrual cycle; pregnancy; contraception and contraception options including abstinence, barrier methods, fertility awareness methods and hormonal methods; facts regarding contraception effectiveness; abortion and abortion methods; sterilization options; reproductive health including menstrual irregularities and typical causes, sexually transmitted infection/HIV and infertility; menopause; dating; marriage; responsible and caring sexual relationships; interpersonal skills; self-esteem; intimacy; body image; gender identity; and sexual orientation. Not all programs address all topics.

General Sexuality/Reproductive Health Education

Programs that provide a variety of informational and supportive services which promote healthy teen attitudes and behaviors regarding sexuality with the objective of heightening their awareness of the consequences of sexual activity and helping teens to avoid an unwanted pregnancy. Topics may include peer pressure, parent/teen communications, relationships, values clarification, self-esteem, human reproduction, birth control and sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS. The goal of many of these programs is to help young people develop the knowledge, autonomy and skills they will need to make the transition to adulthood in good sexual health.

Teen Pregnancy Prevention

Programs that provide comprehensive primary and specialized care which focus on health issues experienced by women. Services are provided in an emotionally supportive and safe environment, and typically include health education, wellness programs and assistance navigating services. Specialized care available at women's health centers vary and may include reproductive and sexual health diagnostic and treatment services, access to abortion, cancer screening, and/or other public education programs focused on women's health.

Women's Health Centers

Programs that identify individuals who have contracted gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes or other infections that are spread by sexual contact and diagnose their conditions. The procedure includes visual examinations, blood tests and analyses of discharge or samples taken from lesions.

Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening

Programs that provide comprehensive preventive, diagnostic and treatment services for people who have contracted gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes or another infection that is transmitted by sexual contact. Treatment usually involves an investigation of recent contacts of people who have been infected to stop the spread of the infection .

Sexually Transmitted Infection Treatment

Programs that offer the screening procedure for the early detection of testicular cancer which involves a manual examination of the testicles to detect lumps, swellings, areas where there is discomfort or other abnormalities.

Testicular Examinations

Programs that distribute condoms, lubricants, dental dams, and/or other supplies that can be used to help stop the spread of sexually transmitted infections, such as HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B and C, among high-risk populations. Distribution programs include self serve dispensers and vending machines.  Individuals who have a history of injection drug use, unprotected intercourse or sexual contact, sexual activity at a young age, multiple sex partners, sex with a high-risk partner, sexually transmitted infection, and/or sex trade work are considered to be at high or increased risk.

Safe Sex Supplies

Programs, primarily within the formal education system, that provide basic health services for school age youth. Services usually include general physical examinations, treatment for minor illnesses and injuries, administration of prescription medication and health screening. Services for students with special health needs may include special feedings, clean intermittent catherization, suctioning, administering medication, and planning for the safety of a student in school. Some programs may provide sexuality education and related services including personal relationship counseling, pregnancy testing, screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections and birth control counseling. Included are health clinics on college/university campuses, health offices in elementary and secondary level schools as well as student health centers in elementary and secondary schools that are operated as a partnership between the school and a community health organization such as a community health center, hospital, or local health department.

Student Health Programs

Programs that provide information regarding practices that reduce the risk of an individual contracting an infection, including AIDS, through sexual activity.

Safer Sex Education

Programs that provide information about vaccines and the illnesses they prevent, laws related to vaccines and exemptions (i.e., immunization requirements for schools, colleges/universities, preschools and child care facilities as well as the conditions under which individuals can request exemptions, usually medical contraindications and reasons of conscience including a philosophical or religious belief), recommended immunization schedules for people of different ages, vaccine safety concerns (e.g., potential side effects), statistics on immunization coverage and disease incidence and/or access to official vaccine information statements that explain to vaccine recipients, their parents, or their legal representatives both the benefits and risks of a vaccine which are handed out whenever certain vaccinations are given. Information may also be available about groups that advocate for reform of policies relating to vaccination requirements and their agenda; and topics of special interest such as travel vaccines, bioterrorism, vaccinations and pregnancy, and immunization recommendations for health care workers. 

Vaccine Information

Programs that provide assistance for people who want to control the size of their families and the spacing of their children, usually through some form of birth control; who want to explore options for conceiving; who have a problem with infertility; or who have questions about the advisability of becoming pregnant or following through with a current pregnancy.

Family Planning

Programs that offer the screening procedure for the early detection of breast cancer which involves a manual examination of the breasts for lumps, thickening or other abnormalities.

Breast Examinations

Programs that offer HIV antibody testing or other screening procedures and require specific identifying information from the person wishing to be tested. The information may include but not be limited to name, address and Social Security number. This information along with test results remains with the test center unless otherwise released by the person seeking testing. Should the person test positive, the personal identifying information may be reported to state epidemiology offices where required by law. Confidential HIV testing may be a component of testing for sexually transmitted infections (STI).

Confidential HIV Testing

Programs usually available in community-based health clinics and family planning centers that provide primary and preventive care, family planning services, diagnostic imaging, management of menopause, medical and surgical treatment of disorders and/or diagnosis and treatment of cancers affecting people with a uterus. Specific routine services generally include pap smears, pelvic examinations, breast exams, urinalysis, pregnancy testing, laboratory tests including testing for sexually transmitted infections, contraception, morning after contraception and hormone replacement therapy.

Programs that engage in a form of advocacy that focuses on marshaling public and legislative support for a particular social or political goal.

Issue Advocacy

Programs that provide information about specific health and health-related topics including diseases and conditions, birth control, alcohol and drug abuse, mental health, safety and other similar topics that interested individuals can access on a website or in person, or by telephone, email, chat, text or other communication channel. Information may be in a self-serve, browsable format (for example a web resource directory or library of audio recordings) or provided by live agents with expertise in the field.

Divisions of businesses or nonprofit agencies that are responsible for developing products or delivering designated services to the public. Departments of NGOs are generally led by a manager, supervisor, director or vice president.

Routine examinations conducted on an annual basis to assess the general physical condition of an individual and detect abnormalities. General physicals vary, but most involve a discussion of any concerns the patient may be having; checking vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, heart rate and respiration rate), weight and general appearance; heart and lung exams using a stethoscope; a head and neck exam that looks at the throat, teeth and gums, ears, sinuses, eyes, lymph nodes, thyroid and carotid arteries; an abdominal exam that uses palpation to detect liver size, the presence of abdominal fluid or tenderness; a visual examination of the extremities; and breast and pelvic exams for women, testicular and prostate exams for men. The annual physical exam also provides an opportunity to refocus attention on prevention and screening and routine laboratory tests may be suggested.

Dental Screening

Programs that provide primary oral health care for patients of all ages. General dentists are responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, management and overall coordination of specialized services related to the patient's oral health needs. Services generally include an oral health history, preventive dental cleanings, dental radiographs, oral cancer screening, an examination of the teeth to detect tooth decay or other problems, a periodontal examination to detect gum disease, dental restorations (e.g., fillings, crowns and implants), cosmetic dentistry, and other procedures such as fluoride treatment.

General Dentistry

Programs that offer preventive dental care including professional teeth cleaning and information about the proper daily self-care of the teeth to remove plaque, food and other residue that is associated with periodontal disease and tooth decay.

Dental Hygiene

Consumer-based, community-controlled, nonprofit outpatient facilities that provide basic health care including physical examinations, immunizations, family planning, nutrition assistance and diagnosis and treatment of common ailments for low income people, people who are homeless or uninsured/underinsured or other medically underserved populations that are geographically, economically and culturally challenged. Services are generally provided on an ability-to-pay basis. In the U.S., most community clinics are part of the network of Federally Qualified Health Centers, and many are known as "free clinics".

Pediatric Dentistry

Mobile dental services bring dental hygiene, preventive care and limited treatment services to people in remote areas who do not have immediate access to a dentist or dental clinic or are unable to leave their homes to seek care at a fixed clinic facility.
