Sports Equipment Donation Programs

Programs that accept donations of paints, brushes, easels, canvases, paper, dyes, chalk, charcoal, colored pencils, clay, glass, wax, beads, pieces of wood, cutting tools, scraps of fabric and other tools and materials that are required for any of a variety of art or craft projects. The materials may be kept by the organization for use in its own program, sold to the general public or teachers (usually at discounted prices) or donated again to arts/crafts programs for use by the people they serve.

Arts and Crafts Donation Programs

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals who are willing, on a voluntary basis without remuneration, to provide companionship and guidance and/or serve as role models for individuals who are disadvantaged because of age, income, physical or developmental disabilities or family environment. Some programs may be looking specifically for male or female adult volunteers to serve as mentors for young men or women from families in which adult figures of the same gender are absent or only available on a limited and inadequate basis or who are troubled and at risk for delinquency; or for people who are willing to serve as peer role models. Also included are volunteer opportunities for career mentors, i.e., professionals who are willing to be paired with people who have an interest in their occupation/job.

Also included are programs that are seeking volunteers to serve in a non-instructional capacity in the classroom.

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals who are willing, on a voluntary basis without remuneration, to decorate or otherwise prepare a facility for a special event e.g., set up tables and chairs or put up/take down a tent; help with participant registration; staff an information booth, manage a silent auction table or do other work during the event; and clean up afterwards.

Event Setup/Cleanup Volunteer Opportunities

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals with the requisite skills and experience who are willing, on a voluntary basis without remuneration, to take responsibility for planning and coordinating special events. Activities may include arranging event logistics, renting  suitable space, overseeing decoration of the facility or other preparations, assigning tasks to supporting staff/volunteers and supervising their activities, and ensuring that the event runs smoothly.

Event Coordination Volunteer Opportunities

Programs that accept cosmetics, shaving utensils, beard trimming equipment, hygienic supplies and other personal care items and keep them for use in their own program or donate them to shelters and other community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve. Also included are programs that assemble a collection of personal/grooming supplies for women and/or men and make the materials available to people in the community who need them.

Programs that accept notebooks, pens, pencils, calculators, book bags and other school supplies and keep them for use in their own programs or donate them to other community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve.

Programs that accept new or used books, magazines and other reading materials and keep them for use in their own program or donate them to libraries, schools and other community agencies for their own use or for distribution to people they serve.

Book/Magazine Donation Programs

Programs that accept new or secondhand clothing (including school clothing and uniforms) for children and/or adolescents, repair the items if necessary, and keep the clothing for use in their own programs, donate it to shelters and other community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve, or sell it to raise money for agency programs.

Children's Clothing Donation Programs

These programs accept donations of all types of clothing including children's clothes, work clothes, maternity clothes and shoes rather than specialize in a particular type of clothing.

General Clothing Donation Programs

Elementary or secondary schools that are operated by a nonprofit board under a contractual arrangement with a state education authority, public university, community college, intermediate school district or local school district. Charter schools can operate any combination of grades from kindergarten through 12th grade, can specialize in a specific subject area or approach, may be required to meet specialized accountability standards and/or to abide by the same laws and regulations that govern public schools, and cannot charge tuition.

Charter Schools

Programs offered by schools or school districts that seek to stabilize the educational experience of homeless children by identifying a school that they will attend on a consistent basis throughout the year regardless of the family's current location and by offering the supportive services they need to succeed in their educational endeavors. Included may be transportation between specified community shelter facilities and the child's school; clothing that is appropriate for a school environment; books and other educational materials; and special classes that help the homeless child deal with issues such as personal hygiene and health care in a homeless setting. The goal of the program is to transition the child into mainstream education.

Homeless School Transition Programs

Divisions of businesses or nonprofit agencies that are responsible for developing products or delivering designated services to the public. Departments of NGOs are generally led by a manager, supervisor, director or vice president.

Nongovernmental Agency Departments

Arts-based charter school for students grades K-8. Homeless Education Liaison provides assistance to school-age youth who do not have a permanent place of residence. Services include school enrollment, transportation to and from school, free breakfast and lunch programs, and other support services.
