Arizona Refugee Resettlement Program | Arizona Refugee Resettlement Program

Programs that assist in filing petitions for permits which allow foreign travelers who will be in the United States for a temporary period of time to present themselves to an immigration official at the border for admission into the country. Nonimmigrant visas are obtained at a U.S. Consulate or Embassy outside the United States, classify the visit according to purpose (e.g., tourism, business), and designate a period of time within which the individual can travel to the border of the U.S. and seek admission. Visas are often valid for multiple visits during a specified period of time. Temporary visitors must have a valid passport from their own country which is stamped at the time of entry, and may be required to maintain a foreign residence and demonstrate a means of financial support. Individuals from qualified countries, as defined in the Visa Waiver Pilot Program, may enter the country without a visa.  Individuals holding a nonimmigrant visa may file an application to extend their period of stay or request a different nonimmigrant status.

Nonimmigrant Visa Application Filing Assistance

Designated representatives of state government offices whose responsibility is to direct resources towards helping refugees and asylees achieve economic and social self-sufficiency after their arrival to the U.S. These entities were established through the Federal Refugee Act of 1980, which incorporated an existing network of private resettlement agencies and public agencies into a national Refugee Resettlement Program. Each state participating in the program is represented by a State Refugee Coordinator.

State Refugee Coordinators

Programs that are responsible for hearing appeals and resolving complaints that have been filed by people who have applied for or are receiving assistance through the Refugee/Entrant Cash Assistance program and believe that they have been discriminated against, that their rights have been violated or that the county has failed to take appropriate action with respect to their application or benefits.

County offices that accept applications and determine eligibility for the Refugee/Entrant Cash Assistance program. Also included are other programs that help people prepare and file Refugee/Entrant Cash Assistance applications and/or are authorized to do eligibility determinations for the program.

Refugee/Entrant Cash Assistance Applications

Government-appointed nonprofit organizations, frequently associated with the faith community, that provide resettlement services through a network of local affiliates for refugee populations designated by the U.S. Department of State. These organizations take the lead in helping newly arrived refugees or refugee families make an adjustment to their new home and community. Services provided by local affiliates may include reception for arriving refugees; provision of a "welcome kit" of immediate necessities; periodic visits with the family during the early days of their transition; collection and provision of household goods; cultural orientation and ESL classes; and assistance in locating housing and employment, using public transportation and identifying other needed services.

Refugee Resettlement Services

Assists asylees, immigrants, parolees, refugees, Special Immigrant Visa holders (SIVs), and human trafficking survivors. Assists with asylum applications, family-based petitions, citizenship, permanent residency, replacement of lost or stolen documents, Special Protected Status Deferred Enforced Departure, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), visas, Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) petitions, and family reunification. Drop-in SIV services include reception and placement, matching grants, Preferred Communities, employment services, cultural orientation, and state Refugee Resettlement Program (RRP) benefits.

Programs that accept bicycles, repair them, if necessary, and give them to individuals or families who have no means of transportation, donate them to other community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve, or sell them to raise money for agency programs.

Bicycle Donation Programs

Programs that provide assistance for non-citizens who are having difficulty understanding, accessing, and/or are unaware of government-sponsored entitlement programs and social services for which they are eligible including housing programs, employment assistance and job training, medical assistance, and other government entitlements. The program may help these individuals understand the eligibility criteria for benefits and services, the benefits/services available, the payment process and the rights of beneficiaries; provide consultation and advice; help them complete application forms; negotiate on their behalf with benefits administration and social service staff; and/or represent them in administrative processes or judicial litigation. Included are benefits counseling organizations that offer a range of advocacy services and legal aid programs that offer more formalized legal assistance.

Immigrant Benefits Assistance

Divisions of businesses or nonprofit agencies that are responsible for developing products or delivering designated services to the public. Departments of NGOs are generally led by a manager, supervisor, director or vice president.

Nongovernmental Agency Departments

Programs that accept gift cards or certificates for distribution to the people they serve. Gift cards are redeemable for goods or services and include those that can be redeemed at specific retail stores, grocery stores, restaurants and gas stations, as well as prepaid phone cards and debit cards issued by banks.

Gift Card Donation Programs

Programs that accept used cellular phones including smartphones, refurbish them if necessary, adapt them for special uses, as desired, and keep them for use in their own program or donate them to other nonprofit organizations for their own use or for distribution to the people they serve.

Cell Phone Donation Programs

Programs that accept used computers and associated hardware, refurbish them if necessary, and keep them for use in their own program or donate them to other nonprofit organizations.

Computer Donation Programs

Programs that accept new or secondhand sheets, blankets, pillowcases, bedspreads, towels and other similar household essentials, refurbish them if necessary, and keep them for use in their own programs, donate them to other community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve, or sell them to raise money for agency programs.

Bedding/Linen Donation Programs

Programs that accept cleaning equipment and/or supplies such as brooms, mops, dust pans, cleansing powder, dish washing soap, window cleaner, furniture polish and trash bags and keep them for use in their own programs, or donate them to other community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve.

Cleaning Product Donation Programs

Programs that accept new or secondhand clothing, repair the items if necessary, and keep the clothing for use in their own programs, donate it to shelters and other community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve, or sell it to raise money for agency programs. These programs accept donations of all types of clothing including children's clothes, work clothes, maternity clothes and shoes rather than specialize in a particular type of clothing.

General Clothing Donation Programs

Programs that accept notebooks, pens, pencils, calculators, book bags and other school supplies and keep them for use in their own programs or donate them to other community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve.

School Supplies Donation Programs

Programs that accept cosmetics, shaving utensils, beard trimming equipment, hygienic supplies and other personal care items and keep them for use in their own program or donate them to shelters and other community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve. Also included are programs that assemble a collection of personal/grooming supplies for women and/or men and make the materials available to people in the community who need them.

Personal/Grooming Supplies Donation Programs

Educational institutions that are actively seeking individuals with knowledge and experience in specialized areas who are willing, on a voluntary basis without remuneration, to teach a special class or seminar in that subject (which may be academic or vocational) in situations where the school is unable to bring in a regular teacher for the job.

Teaching/Instruction Volunteer Opportunities

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals who are willing, on a voluntary basis without remuneration, to provide companionship and guidance and/or serve as role models for individuals who are disadvantaged because of age, income, physical or developmental disabilities or family environment. Some programs may be looking specifically for male or female adult volunteers to serve as mentors for young men or women from families in which adult figures of the same gender are absent or only available on a limited and inadequate basis or who are troubled and at risk for delinquency; or for people who are willing to serve as peer role models. Also included are volunteer opportunities for career mentors, i.e., professionals who are willing to be paired with people who have an interest in their occupation/job.

Mentoring Services Volunteer Opportunities

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals who are able to read or speak one or more languages other than English who are willing to serve as an interpreter or translator or otherwise use their abilities on projects that benefit the organization or the people it serves.

Language Interpretation/Translation Volunteer Opportunities

Programs that assist in filing petitions by aliens who are seeking admission to the United States with the intention of residing in the U.S. on a permanent basis. In most cases, a relative or prospective employer files the immigrant visa application on behalf of the individual. Certain applicants such as investors, workers with extraordinary ability and certain special immigrants may petition on their own behalf. Petitioners apply for a specific immigrant classification for the beneficiary, e.g., priority worker, spouse of a lawful permanent resident and, when the petition has been approved, wait until a visa number becomes available.
