Programs that provide information and guidance for individuals who need to understand the local tax laws as they apply to people in their situation.

Local Income Tax Information

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals with the requisite skills and experience who are willing, on a voluntary basis without remuneration, to help people obtain and responsibly use credit, obtain or correct information in their credit reports, reduce their debt burden, manage their financial resources more effectively, complete their tax returns during tax season or pay their bills in an orderly way. Included are organizations with volunteer positions for individuals who can manage the financial affairs of older adults with conditions like Alzheimer's disease or individuals with disabilities who are unable to handle the responsibility themselves. Tasks include receiving and depositing benefits checks from Social Security or other federal programs, and/or writing checks and paying bills for people served by the program.

Personal Finances/Tax Assistance Volunteer Opportunities

Programs that help people file appeals with the appropriate tax authorities and/or represent them in appeals hearings in situations where they disagree with a decision by a tax examiner regarding the assessment of business taxes, personal income taxes, bank and corporate taxes, sales taxes, property taxes or other taxes, their eligibility for special tax credits or exemptions, or the administration of tax rebate programs.

Tax Appeals Filing Assistance

Programs that offer tax information seminars for groups of people who share common tax interests. The seminars are conducted by IRS employees or trained volunteers and cover any of a variety of topics that can be tailored to the needs of participants. Presentations may include films or videotapes and discussion of tax questions.

Tax Education Seminars

Programs that are staffed by lawyers who offer information and guidance regarding legal matters, proposed lines of conduct, claims or contentions including opinions on the party's rights, responsibilities and liabilities; and who offer suggestions for an appropriate course of action, but do not represent clients in court.
