Programs that supply dried or canned dog or cat food, bird seed, fodder or other types of sustenance for animals and other creatures that people keep as pets. Also included are programs that provide financial assistance that enables owners to purchase food for their pets.

Pet Food

Food pantries and other similar organizations that are actively seeking individuals who are willing, on a voluntary basis without remuneration, to unload purchased or donated food, stock the shelves, pack donated food into shopping bags for distribution to people the agency serves and clean the pantry after it has closed.

Food Sorting/Packing Volunteer Opportunities

Programs that are actively seeking individuals with the requisite knowledge, skills, experience and, in some cases, credentials, who are willing to work on a voluntary basis without remuneration providing information and guidance for people who need assistance in applying for TANF, Food Stamps/SNAP and other government benefits. Eligibility counseling volunteers may also answer questions about government benefits and help people complete necessary forms.

Programs that provide financial assistance to help people pay fees associated with obtaining an identification card or replacing an identification card that has been lost or stolen in situations where they cannot otherwise afford one.

Programs that provide financial assistance to help people pay fees associated with obtaining a driver license or replacing driver license that has been lost or stolen in situations where they cannot otherwise afford one.

Programs that provide financial assistance to help people pay for a copy of a birth certificate in situations where they cannot otherwise afford one.

Birth Certificate Fee Payment Assistance

Public or private organizations that provide showers, baths or other facilities where homeless people, travelers and others who do not have access to private bathing facilities can wash. Included are permanent shower facilities as well as mobile installations that can be moved from place to place. Also included are organizations that provide vouchers that people can use to access bathing facilities.

Programs that acquire food products through donations, canned food drives, food bank programs or direct purchase and distribute the food to people who are in emergency situations. Some pantries deliver food to people whose disabilities or illnesses make it difficult for them to leave home.

Food Pantries

Provides a day center and overnight shelter for individuals that identify as female or non-binary who are homeless. Offers breakfast, clothing, pet food, personal hygiene supplies, and shower and laundry facilities, and help applying and paying for identification documents. Case workers are available to provide referrals to additional services. Center is pet-friendly. Also offers a warming center in the winter.

Programs that accept gift cards or certificates for distribution to the people they serve. Gift cards are redeemable for goods or services and include those that can be redeemed at specific retail stores, grocery stores, restaurants and gas stations, as well as prepaid phone cards and debit cards issued by banks.

Soup kitchens, congregate meal sites, shelters, residential facilities and other programs that serve meals that are actively seeking individuals with the requisite skills who are willing, on a voluntary basis without remuneration, to prepare, serve and/or clean up after meals provided to residents or those in need.

Meal Preparation/Serving Volunteer Opportunities

Programs, usually sponsored by community organizations or coalitions, that provide temporary shelter for homeless people, generally in dormitory-style facilities with very little privacy. Most community shelters offer support services which may include counseling, advocacy, referrals and help with future plans; and enforce house rules including curfews and mandatory household chores. Participation in religious activities is either optional or not a part of the program. There may be differences in intake, length of stay and amenities in family oriented facilities and those that target other specific populations.

Public or private facilities for washing, drying and ironing clothes that are available to homeless people, travelers and other individuals who do not have access to private laundry facilities.

Laundry Facilities

Programs that accept new or secondhand clothing, repair the items if necessary, and keep the clothing for use in their own programs, donate it to shelters and other community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve, or sell it to raise money for agency programs. These programs accept donations of all types of clothing including children's clothes, work clothes, maternity clothes and shoes rather than specialize in a particular type of clothing.

General Clothing Donation Programs

Programs that provide clothing for people who need it. Available items depend on what has been donated and is on hand at any given time. The collection may include but does not specialize in children's clothes, work clothes, maternity clothes and shoes.

Programs that maintain information about community resources that are appropriate for a specific target group or human services sector (for example, youth programs or addiction services) and which link individuals who are in need of specialized services with appropriate resources and/or which provide information about community agencies and organizations that offer specialized services.

Specialized Information and Referral

Programs that develop plans for the evaluation, treatment and/or care of individuals who, because of age, illness, disability or other difficulties, need assistance in planning and arranging for services; which assess the individual's needs; coordinate the delivery of needed services; ensure that services are obtained in accordance with the case plan; and follow up and monitor progress to ensure that services are having a beneficial impact on the individual. Programs that accept pet food, water and food dishes, leashes, crates and other pet-related supplies, and keep them for use in their own program or donate them to other nonprofit organizations for their own use or for distribution to the people they serve.

Animal Food/Supplies Donation Programs

Programs offered by churches, restaurants and other organizations that provide meals in a central location for people who lack the resources needed to buy and prepare food. The food may be distributed to people who line up for the meal or may be served to people seated in a dining hall setting, and participants rarely need to establish eligibility for the service.

Soup Kitchens

Programs that accept shopping carts, canvass bags, duffle bags, backpacks, suitcases, or other portable travel/storage devices that travelers, homeless people and others can use to transport their belongings and keep them for use in their own program or donate them to shelters and other community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve.

Portable Travel/Storage Container Donation Programs

Programs that assist individuals who have inadequate or no ID, particularly those who are homeless or have little or no income, to obtain or replace identifying documents. May include assisting clients with application forms, filing and paying for applications on the client's behalf, providing a mailing address when necessary for delivery, and offering ongoing safe storage for the documents.

Programs that accept paper, binders, labels, writing pads, scissors, rulers, pens/pencils, rubber bands, paper clips and other office supplies and keep them for use in their own program or donate them to other community-based organizations.

Office Supplies Donation Programs

Programs that provide daytime or evening access to heated facilities during times of extreme cold for people who are temporarily at risk for exposure due to a power failure, fuel shortage, road closure, homelessness or other situations which make them vulnerable.

Extreme Cold Warming Centers

Programs that accept cosmetics, shaving utensils, beard trimming equipment, hygienic supplies and other personal care items and keep them for use in their own program or donate them to shelters and other community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve. Also included are programs that assemble a collection of personal/grooming supplies for women and/or men and make the materials available to people in the community who need them.

Personal/Grooming Supplies Donation Programs

Programs that accept donations of new or gently used socks, undershirts, bras, slips, nightgowns, pajamas, bathrobes and other undergarments/nightwear; and keep the clothing for use in their own programs, or donate it community-based organizations for distribution to the people they serve.

Underwear/Sleepwear Donation Programs

Centers where homeless people can spend time during the day or evening. Services may include counseling and/or medication monitoring on a formal or informal basis; personal hygiene supplies; facilities for showering, shaving, napping, laundering clothes, making necessary telephone calls or attending to other personal needs; and other basic supportive services. Some centers may also provide meals or facilities for cooking. Programs that focus on homeless youth may provide case management, living skills training, family reunification assistance, classes and other educational supports, pre-employment training, health education (including HIV prevention), help in obtaining valid ID and other services that help youth successfully exit street life and transition to independent living.

Homeless Drop In Centers

Provides financial assistance for identification documents including drivers licenses, state identification cards, and birth certificates. Also provides safe storage for these documents at the office to prevent loss or theft.
