Registers and classifies adult males. In the event of an emergency, the list is used to draft men for compulsory service in the armed forces. Also runs an Alternative Service Program for men classified as conscientious objectors during a draft.

Offices of the government agency that is responsible for registering, classifying and delivering untrained military personnel to the armed forces in the event of a national emergency which requires reinstatement of the draft. The peacetime mission of the agency is registration only.

Selective Service System

Post offices and other organizations that supply, process and respond to inquiries about registration forms which provide information that the Selective Service System can use to identify, classify and deliver individuals for induction into the active military in the event of a national emergency which requires reinstatement of the draft. All male U.S. citizens born after December 31, 1959 are required to register within the 60-day period starting 30 days before their 18th birthday.
